2017 new California Laws include the following:

California’s 2016 gender wage equality law revisions prohibit an employer from paying any of its employees at wage rates less than those paid to employees of the opposite sex for substantially similar work, when viewed as a composite of skill, effort, and responsibility, even if the wage differential is from different establishments or locations. The 2017 revisions also prohibit an employer from paying any of its employees lower wage rates based on race or ethnicity.

California remains a leading jurisdiction which protects the privacy rights for electronic data. The new 2016 law prohibits government agencies from gaining access to electronic communications or electronic device information without a search warrant or other appropriate order issued by the court.

2015 New California Laws

January 1, 2015, brought in a New Year and new California laws. These new laws include the following:

“Native American Day” is California’s new state holiday. The designated day is the fourth Friday in September. The legislature enacted this new state holiday because “…As the original peoples of our nation and state, Native Americans have provided extensive historical contributions to the State of California. For more than 12,000 years, Native Americans have inhabited, preserved, and cultivated this land that ultimately became the Golden State. To this day, several iconic regions in California, from Lake Tahoe to Malibu, are named after native origin….”
